We live in a world where safety is constantly looked at and questioned. Even when the world seems to progress towards equality, someone comes and blows the cover about sexual harassment and violence at the workplace. Fortunately, we are now at a point in life where people are ready to listen to these issues and do something about it, rather than just sit around and talk about these issues. Here are some ways the work place could be turned into a safe and comfortable zone for women.
1. People should understand safety is not a joke
According to the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act of 2013, organizations have to follow strict and specific guidelines to ensure safe conduct of women at the workplace. However, more often than not, this law is brushed under the rug, with no regard for women safety. Let people at your workplace know you have this rule and make sure the guidelines are followed to the tee. Rules are there for a reason and when followed, safety is not too far away.
2. Hold regular workshops to drive home the point of safety
Unfortunately, the other half of our world seems to think its okay to pass casual innuendos, without realising the impact these comments have. Hold workshops and talk about how important gender equality is both at the workplace and outside. These meetings include discussions on sensitizing employees harassment, discrimination, getting them acquainted with the best practices and safety protocols already in place. Start off with meetings every two weeks and if you think they are being heard, bring them down to once a month!
3. Use technology for the good
We have always talked about our privacy being invaded by technology at the workplace. However, when women’s safety is such a serious issue, this particular form of invasion is absolutely necessary. Cameras are a must have for organisations where the men to women ratio is not equal. Internal security helps keep a check on what goes on and even though the checking is not done on regular intervals. To make things better, it helps to keep a check on the cab service used by your company. This ensure there is nothing negative that goes on once the employee has left the office.
4. Let your employees know you mean business
One of the major ways you could ensure complete safety at the workplace is to put in place a zero tolerance place. Apart from open dialogues, training and regular workshops, it is important to have this policy in place. This ensures ALL the employees follow these policies and helps in creating a comfortable work environment.
Safety at work is important. Safety for women at work is even more important. Let your employees know you care about them and that there is no limit to where you would go to protect your employee’s safety.
