Facebook F8 Conference: Zuckerburg Pushes For Augmented Reality Through Smartphones

Facebook on Tuesday introduced an assignment to make cameras of the existing smartphones a window for augmented reality focusing on what people have in their hands instead of waiting for new high-tech eyewear.

In the popular Annual Developer Conference of Facebook, F8, CEO of the company, Mark Zuckerberg mentioned that the smartphone cameras are the first and promising platform for augmented reality features which is made to synchronize with the social network.

In the F8 conference, held in the heart of Silicon Valley, Mark Zuckerberg seemed confident that his team of developers is working to push this augmented-reality platform forward.

He said: “We are going to make the smartphone camera the first mainstream augmented reality platform.”

Mark also opened about his dream project Social VR. He said: “This will let you chat with your friends in virtual places around the globe and even take virtual selfies.” He also added saying that Augmented reality will help mix the digital and the physical in new ways and that this is all about extending the physical world online.

Zuckerberg, in the same conference, unveiled a new virtual reality engine for Facebook called “Spaces.” This allows the users to interact in the virtual world. One can shop together, play board and table top games together. In simple terms, Spaces lets users create an avatar and then ‘meet up’ with other avatars in a digital world.

Now, Facebook is no longer just an online platform to catch up with your family and friends. With Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook Live, Messenger, Oculus, Facebook is now so much more.
