Startup Stories

With Apple’s highly anticipated “It’s Glowtime” event scheduled for September 9, 2024, speculation is rife about which existing devices may be discontinued following the launch of new products. Historically, Apple has a pattern of phasing out older models to streamline its product lineup and encourage consumers to opt for the latest offerings. This year appears to be no different, with several iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and AirPods likely to be retired.

iPhones Expected to be Discontinued

Apple is expected to discontinue several iPhone models, particularly those that are being replaced by the new iPhone 16 series:

  • iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max: Following Apple’s trend of discontinuing flagship models a year after their release, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are likely to be phased out to make room for the new Pro models in the iPhone 16 lineup.
  • iPhone 14 Plus: This model, which was introduced as a larger alternative to the standard iPhone 14, may also be discontinued. Its sales have not met expectations, and Apple may choose to focus on the more affordable standard iPhone 14 instead.
  • iPhone 13: As the oldest model still available, the iPhone 13 is expected to be retired, leaving only the standard iPhone 14 in the entry-level segment.

Apple Watch Models Facing Retirement

The upcoming event will likely see the introduction of new Apple Watch models, leading to the discontinuation of older versions:

  • Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2: These models are expected to be replaced by the new Apple Watch Series 10 and Ultra 3. The Series 10 is rumored to feature significant upgrades, including a larger display and a new chip, while the Ultra 3 is anticipated to enhance performance with improved AI capabilities.
  • Apple Watch SE 2: Depending on the timing of the launch of the new SE model, the current SE 2 may also be discontinued.

AirPods and iPads Set for Discontinuation

In addition to the iPhones and Apple Watches, Apple is likely to refresh its AirPods lineup:

  • AirPods 2 and 3: These models are expected to be replaced by new AirPods 4, which will introduce features such as Active Noise Cancellation and a new design.

For iPads, the existing iPad Mini (6th generation) and iPad (10th generation) may be discontinued in favor of updated versions that incorporate the latest Apple Silicon technology.

Conclusion

As Apple prepares for its September 9 event, the anticipation surrounding new product launches is palpable. The discontinuation of older models will not only streamline Apple’s offerings but also encourage consumers to consider the latest innovations in technology. With a focus on enhancing user experience through improved features and capabilities, the upcoming event promises to be a significant moment in Apple’s product evolution.

U.S. AI Startup Anthropic Expands Global Ban to Tackle Chinese Tech Influence

Anthropic - StartupStories

U.S. AI leader Anthropic has expanded its restrictions on Chinese entities, taking a firm stance against access to its advanced AI models—including the renowned Claude chatbot—by any company or subsidiary more than 50% owned, directly or indirectly, by Chinese organizations. This updated AI policy is designed to block loopholes that previously allowed access to powerful AI tools via overseas affiliates, joint ventures, or cloud providers, reinforcing Anthropic’s commitment to responsible technology governance and the protection of sensitive data.

Driven by rising national security and regulatory concerns, Anthropic’s move highlights potential risks involving companies subject to Chinese jurisdiction, which could be compelled to cooperate with state intelligence and share critical information. The sweeping policy marks the first public, formal ban by a major U.S. AI company based on entity ownership and control, rather than only geographic boundaries, ultimately intensifying scrutiny on AI exports and global tech supply chains.

While the immediate business impact is expected to be modest, experts consider this a landmark decision that may set industry-wide precedents, prompting other U.S. tech giants to reevaluate their own AI export and usage policies. This development not only heightens the U.S.–China tech rivalry but also shapes the future landscape of AI governance, data security, and international compliance in a rapidly evolving digital world.
