If you have a habit of taking your work home every day, on weekends, on vacations and during your free time, then you most definitely are a workaholic. Long hours with little to no rest is harmful to the mind, body, soul and social relationships. Working hard to grow a business, establish a company or yourself may seem like a good idea but only up to a certain point. Overworking does not help productivity levels and is harmful in the long run. If you are unable to free up more time from work or if you spend more time working than initially intended, then this article is for you. Being a workaholic is not a status symbol, rather a serious condition that should be treated.
Here are a few pointers on how to stop being a workaholic.
1. Shut it down and take a break
Make it a point to shut down your electric devices a couple of times a day to just relax and take a break. Pencil in a break time in your schedule, take a short walk, go for a jog, do yoga or just listen to music. Even 10 minutes away from work can make a whole lot of difference.
2. Leave it at the office
Let the office time be the designated time for work. When you’re at home, make it a point to be at home mentally as well. Once working hours are done, leave the rest of the work for the next day and don’t carry it home. Even emails and quick phone calls or any work related communication are banned at home.
3. Plan vacations ahead
The most important part of any workaholic’s life is their work. Organize your work in such a way that a few days are just meant for vacations. Plan when and where you would like to go well in advance so that no other work can interfere with your holiday.
4. Learn to say NO
Limit the number of assignments you accept to limit the amount of time you have to work. Complete one assignment before you take on the next one. Organize your assignments one after the other and prioritize them in accordance with their importance. If something is not working out, delegate and move on. Not every idea will work out. It is important to recognize a sinking ship before it drags you down.
5. Develop self awareness
While all the above steps will help you relax more and work less, the first step on the road to recovery is acceptance. Recognize the symptoms of workaholism in its early stages and get professional help if you are overly dedicated to working. Monitor the time you are putting into work, identify when your work life is affecting your personal life and create boundaries to develop a healthy balance between both of them.
Being a workaholic does not help any one, including yourself. But self care, on the other hand, will keep you on the top of your game.
