The people you employ are not always on the same page as you are. There are those who start out on the right note while there are others who start with a bang just fail to take off as expected. Different types of people require different forms of motivation to push them forward and Today, we take a look at how you can motivate even the most uncooperative employee on your roster!

1. The perpetually defensive one 

When I started off my career, I was defensive. I needed constant security and validation from my superiors. Every error would be taken to heart and every mistake pointed out felt like the stab of knife in the back. What helped me get past this phase was the way my boss communicated with me. There was open communication about everything. There was a clear discussion on what was happening and what was going on, with me being clued in on all the points I needed to know. If you have an employee like this, make sure your door is always open and make sure you let them know they are valued!

2. The dramatic ones

For these, no day is complete without a couple of tears, some loud noises and a few choice words thrown around for the right impact. If these dudes have no drama, they get board and more often than not, pile onto another person’s drama. The result of this is NEVER good. Keep an eye out for these people and every time you think the situation is getting out of hand, swoop in and calm things down with a kind word or two!

3. The ready to be leader 

Have you ever had the feeling where you look at a newbie and like them from the moment your eyes fall on them? These are the people who know what they want and are not afraid to go after their dream. As an employer, your role is to push these people in the right direction, to train them and to help them grow! Spotting these people early on makes things easier as well.

4. The free spirit 

These are the kind who seek freedom in terms of creativity. They like to take their own time in getting the work done, with an autonomy over the task. Support them to understand their values and clarify their vision for their life and work. Restrictions, rules and procedures can demotivate them as they hate bureaucracy. Be clear and specific about their objectives; avoid micro management, but create clear boundaries to give them the freedom they need.

5. The cynical ones

Every team has one of these people. They always say no first before they can agree to anything. Turning their frown upside down is not an easy task and as an employer, harder still. When dealing with people like this, it is important to make them comfortable and to understand their space constraints. The cynics are a good boost for the team, helping you get the much needed reality check, even if you do not necessarily want to face the truth!

Even if these personality types do not always show up at your workplace, there are others who make life at work just as hard. Spot these people early on, so there is no confusion for later and so you have a clear thought process in mind!
