National Internet Exchange of India, has asked a Delhi-based company Startup India Advisory Pvt., Ltd., to give up their domain name startupindia.in citing its similarity with the Government of India’s initiative Startup India.
The startup India program’s official website domain name is startupindia.gov.in which can be confused with the domain name of the other website. MoneyControl reported that NIXI sent a letter to the owner of the company to give up their registered site.
NIXI acting on behalf of Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion said in their letter the domain name is not only misleading but also in violation of the StartupIndia Program.
The Delhi-based entrepreneur whose name has not been revealed had their website registered in February 2014 whole two years before PM Narendra Modi launched the national program.
The company, an advisory service provider for tech startups had also put up a disclaimer stating it has nothing to do with the government’s initiative and is a website of Startup India Advisory Services Pvt., Ltd., incorporated in July 2015.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity a senior government official told MoneyControl that NIXI only acts when a government department asks for it. They also added that NIXI doesn’t have any kind of power to hold, block or transfer a domain.
Startup India launched their Mentor on Road initiative yesterday which aims to reach 500 US startups in 38 cities over 78 days.
