Mumtaz M. Kazi: Asia’s First Woman Locomotive Driver Receives Nari Shakti Award From President

Mumtaz M. Kazi is Asia’s first ever woman diesel engine locomotive driver who fought all odds to attain this position.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, She was honored with the Nari Shakti Award from the President of India, Shri Dr. Pranab Mukherji. She is one among the top seven women who received this prestigious award.

Coming from an orthodox Muslim family, it is now almost 25 years she had joined this job. In 1989, she had applied for a job in the railways as her father was also in the same profession. Initially, she faced much disapproval from her father. Eventually, a few relatives and railway officials convinced her father to allow Mumtaz to chase her dreams.

Mumtaz has been driving different types of trains since she was 20 years. She was the locomotive driver for one of the trains which runs on the busiest routes of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus- Thane Station.

She is married to an Electrical Engineer Maqsood Kazi. The couple has two children, a 14-year-old son Tausif and an 11-year-old daughter Fateen. No doubt, her family is very proud of what she had achieved.

In 1995, she made it into the “Limca Book Of World Records” as the first lady locomotive driver. She was also honored with the “Railways General Manager” Award in 2015.

Mumtaz now stands as an inspiration for millions of women in India who wants to break the stereotype that this kind of jobs is suited only for men.
