Almost every person will have drank a cold glass of fizzy cola topped with ice cubes to quench their thirst in Summer.  When anyone says cola, there is almost undoubtedly only one brand which comes to their mind and that is the iconic Coca Cola with its red and white branding.  Coca Cola was a concoction invented by a pharmacist John Stith Pemberton in 1886 and was marketed as a drink that could relieve pain caused by headache.  The name Coca Cola was derived from two of the ingredients which were used in creating Coca Cola, namely Coca leaves and Kola nuts.  Since then, there was no stopping Coca Cola as it spread its wings worldwide.  The brand is so popular that it boasts of a presence in almost every corner of the world. 

When the Coca Cola formula was purchased from the Pemberton heirs by American businessman Asa G. Candler, The Coca-Cola Company was formally founded in 1892.  Fast forward a century later Coca-Cola is a sprawling conglomerate which owns a multitude of brands.  While it would be time consuming to list out every brand owned by Coca-Cola, there are however several brands which stand out.

1) Coca Cola:

The original and the first brand which started the story of Coca-Cola Company the star performer is the most easily recognisable brand everywhere in the world.  

2) Diet Coke:

Diet Coke is a sugar free drink which is manufactured by the Coca-Cola Company and contains artificial sweeteners instead of sugars.  Diet Coke has capitalised on the millennial market who are calorie conscious as well as the markets of people who require low sugar diets like diabetics.

3) Fanta:

The iconic orange flavoured drink Fanta is also one of the most easily recognizable brands worldwide.  Interestingly Fanta originated as a substitute for Coca-Cola during the American trade embargo on Nazi Germany in 1940.  This trade embargo affected the availability of Coca-Cola ingredients in Germany prompting  Max Keith, the head of Coca-Cola Deutschland (Coca-Cola GmbH), to create a new product for the German market, using only ingredients available in Germany at the time.

4) Sprite:

Sprite was originally developed under the brand name Fanta Klare Zitrone (Clear Lemon Fanta,) a lime and lemon based soft drink.  However, the drink was renamed to Sprite in the United States of America in 1961 as a competitor to Pepsi’s 7Up.

5) Thums Up:

Thums Up is a cola flavour which is created specifically for the Indian palette. Thums Up was created in 1977, after the American company Coca-Cola withdrew from India, due to regulations requiring it to disclose its formula.  Thums Up enjoys a huge market share in India because of the spices used in its creation making it an Indian favourite.

6) Minute Maid:

Minute Maid was the first company to market orange juice concentrate, allowing it to be distributed throughout the United States and served year round.  The brand grew in popularity among the American public before Coca-Cola Company purchased it in 1960.

7) Dasani:

Following the success of Pepsi’s bottled water brand Aquafina, Coca-Cola launched its own line of bottled water named as Dasani.

8) Kinley:

Kinley is another brand owned by Coca-Cola which manufactures bottled water as well as carbonated water with a wide variety of flavours which could be used as mixers.

9) Costa Coffee:

Costa Coffee began as a wholesale operation supplying roasted coffee to caterers and specialist Italian coffee shops.  Coca-Cola acquired Costa Coffee in 2019 and has a brand presence in over 30 countries.

10) Powerade:

Powerade is a sports drink brand which is manufactured by Coca-Cola mainly as a competitor to rival Pepsi’s, Gatorade, which holds a commanding share in the sports drink market.
