Over the years, Samsung has established itself as the King of the smartphone world. Standing neck to neck in competition with Apple, the smartphone company has proved its worth without a shadow of doubt. With the weekend is upon us, here is looking at some truly interesting Samsung facts.

1. The beginning 

Samsung was not a smartphone and electronic supplier from the beginning. Way back in the year 1970, Samsung was involved in producing noodles and other food related items! In fact, the first electrical product to be sold by Samsung was a 12 inch black and white TV!

2. Other interests 

While Samsung works primarily in the electronic field, the Group has over 70 sub groups. Interestingly, the tallest building in Dubai, the Burj Khalifa, was built by the construction sub group!

3. Creation through destruction 

To inspire creation, Lee Kun Hee, the Chairman of Samsung, asked his staff to create a pile of 1,50,000 phones and over a 1,000 tax machines. How did this inspire creation you ask? Once the pile was ready, Lee instructed his staff to destroy the pile in front of an audience of 2,000 people just to drive home the seriousness of a changing world! The point of the presentation was to show the world Samsung no longer played with rules. The company was ready to become a leading force in innovation and creation.

4. Net profit 

As of recent records, Samsung accounts for 17% of Korea’s Gross Domestic Product! Not a bad profit at all, right?  Samsung’s net sales for 2011 were $ 247 billion. Samsung’s electronics division sales were $179 billion. In calendar 2011, Apple did $127.8 billion in sales.

5. First CDMA phone 

The Samsung SCH 100 was the first ever phone by Samsung to use the CDMA technology in the year 1996. While that may not be such a huge deal in the current world, it was quite a big achievement for a company like Samsung. In another form of firsts, the first ever watch phone was released in the year 1999. There were even voice commands for dialing your contacts. How fancy!
