Working in a startup or in a corporate office we spend a majority of our time surrounded by colleagues. But should these colleagues also become your close friends? Having friends at work place is very beneficial for a variety of reasons, given that a lot of time is spent in close proximity with these people.

Working with new people and ultimately becoming close friends is definitely a plus and can have quantifiable benefits, both during office hours and at other times. Here are 5 reasons why it is necessary to be friends at work rather than just colleagues.

1. Share the burden
A burden shared is a burden halved. Especially if you’re working for the development of a new company, becoming friends will allow you to share work and the burden placed on a generally small team. When everyone is facing similar levels of pressure and are working towards the same goal, sharing the burden makes working a little more bearable and a lot more fun. They help you destress after a long day at work and remind you that success is inevitable.

2. They boost morale
When things aren’t going your way or you are struggling with the latest client, they will be there to lend an ear and offer tried and tested solutions. They also boost morale and help you become a better version of yourself. Monday blues become a little less painful when you can catch up with your friends at work.

3. Personal and Professional development
When you spend a lot of time in the presence of a few people you tend to notice their quirks, their strengths and their weaknesses. Friends at a work place can help you develop your strengths, work on your weaknesses and grow personally and professionally. Work friends can become sources of all round development.

4. Engagement and Productivity
Several studies have proven that close relationships between employees increase the productivity levels and growth rate of the company. A lively and open workplace atmosphere increases communication, interdependence and interaction. Friendly superiors are also a source of encouragement and motivation.

5. They’ve got your back
Working in high stress level environments can be very daunting. But work place friends can help relieve some of that pressure by helping out when ever they can in what ever capacity. Looking over a presentation before the meeting, waiting a little late for you to finish work or even a smile before the big presentation can boost morale, keep you calm and help you grow in the right direction.

Friends, in general, make life a better place. So why not have friends at work as well!
