Strong Women Entrepreneurs In Startups

It started off with small home made papads and achar. Then they took over the Amway and Oriflame beauty and health distribution. Now women are taking over the startup industry by a storm. Never one to follow, women entrepreneurs are forging paths and covering areas once considered to be taboos. Entrepreneurship is no longer a hobby or a side business for women over all India.

Here’s a list of women who have defied convention and broken stereotypes to become role models:

1. Aditi Gupta: Menstrupedia
Breaking probably the biggest taboo in Indian society, Aditi Gupta along with her husband Tuhin Paul created a Hindi comic book to educate girls about menstruation. Her comic book has now grown into a full fledged website that guides women on hygiene and health. It simplifies menstruation and answers frequently asked questions.

2. Richa Kar: Zivame
Zivame is the first of its kind web platform for women to browse through lingerie online. Noticing a huge gap in the e-commerce sector for women, Richa Kar launched Zivame in 2011 and now boasts of over 2000 lingerie styles to choose from. Zivame provides women a space to understand and explore their needs with the styles and sizes and get the goods delivered to their doorstep.

3. Suchi Mukherjee: LimeRoad
Suchi was 1 of 15 women worldwide ‘Rising Talents, high potential leaders under 40, and rightly so. She launched her startup at the same time she gave birth to her second son. LimeRoad today is a leading market space for fashion in India. It has also raised $20 million funding from Lightspeed Venture Partners, Matrix Partners, and Tiger Global.

4. Anisha Singh: MyDala
Founder and CEO of India’s largest coupon and discount marketing platform, Anisha Singh turned her startup around from the brink of failure in 2011. With a presence in over 200 Indian cities and 200 million registered users, Anisha Singh performed miracles when her first child was only a toddler and her second child a few weeks old.

5. Sairee Chahal: Sheroes
From empowering herself to empowering fellow working women, Sairee Chahal created an online portal for women to find jobs with different work opportunities. CEO and founder of Sheroes’ philosophy have been to help women navigate career options and find work that fits in with their personal life as well.
