It is not easy to make the decision of either continuing with the company you work for or to start looking for a new job. While a lot of factors affect this decision, a few questions can help you evaluate the next best course of action. Here are a couple of questions you should try to answer before making this difficult decision.
1. What value do you add to the company and vice versa?
Evaluate how much you’ve grown since joining the company and how much has the company benefitted from your work. It can be your personal individual work or the value and skill you add to the team. Analyse how much you can still learn from the company and how much can that learning curve benefit the company in the long run. Will you grow by continuing with the company or have you peaked in your field of work?
2. Has the student become the master?
Have you learned everything you could from your mentor and are ready to step out into the big bad world? Mentors teach the nuances of the trade and support your growth in any company. But if you’ve learned everything your mentor had to offer then maybe it’s time to look for a new mentor in a different field. If you stop learning, work tends to become monotonous and boring. A job you used to love doing once upon a time might start to feel like work and you tend to carry on in a robotic manner.
3. Are you playing to your strengths?
Everybody is good at something. Are you using your strong points to the fullest capabilities? If your energy is not being spent on the right places and your weaknesses take the center stage, you won’t stay energized for the long haul. It is a waste of good resources when the right person is not or cannot be applied for the right job. If your strengths aren’t being used then are your ideas no longer heard or valued? Don’t work in an environment that won’t hone your strengths or if your skills aren’t being tapped.
4. Do you get bored easily?
Occasionally looking for a break from a hectic work schedule is different from getting bored on a daily basis. When you’ve outgrown a position and feel stagnated, it’s time to look for new avenues. If you find yourself getting easily distracted, everyday is a struggle for you to get to work and you are frequently feeling drowsy on the job, the passion you first had towards your job has fizzled out. Consider moving out when you start to feel miserable every morning and dread going into work.
5. Do you feel like you don’t fit in any longer?
You have friends at work but you still feel like you don’t belong there or you constantly daydream about being anywhere else but at work might be a sign for you to move on. Your to do list keeps getting longer and deadlines loom closer but you can’t get yourself to wrap up your projects might be a red flag indicating that it’s time for a change. Your performance will start to suffer if you’re no longer productive at work even though you’ve performed those tasks million times already.
Don’t work harder, work smarter! Do what’s best for you and the company your company. Change may be hard at first but change can also bring in new and better opportunities.
