How To
How To Prove Your Worth At Work
We recently had a performance appraisal and one of the most common statements I heard after (apart from those on pay hikes) was people saying they were unable to express the amount of work they did. While it would seem but natural for your supervisors to know who you are and what you do, reality is far from the truth. What do you do then? How do you prove your worth and let your bosses know you are one to appreciate and admire? Unless you are an out and out narcissist, these tips could just turn around your fate at work!
1. Watch the “wes”
If you are part of a team, then this is exactly what you need to do, NOT. It is such an easy habit to fall back and say “oh, my team and I handled the project,” “oh my team pulled off the entire project without a glitch.” How many times is it really an individual effort masked and turned into a team effort? Drop subtle pointers on what you have done and make sure the message gets across!
2. Speak up
Do not be afraid to speak up. Ever. The more you say quiet, the less you are noticed. My boss always said a very specific thing to me, “Always talk about the work you do and ALWAYS back it up so when they ask for proof, you have it at hand.”
3. Learn to say no
I know this is a severely tried and tested theory, but honestly, learn to say no. At the beginning of my working days, I would take on everything and stop breathing. When you cannot say no, it becomes hard to focus on the task at hand and your work suffers. Eventually, your value also diminishes.
4. Set goals for yourself
Back when i started working, I created a jar of goals. The jar had pointers on what I want from life and how working was going to help me get to the point. If you do not have a tracking mechanism of your work, then this jar is exactly what you need. This not only helps you streamline your success, it also helps in creating a specific career path!
In a cut throat world where everyone is trying to get ahead, knowing what to say and do when is extremely important. Go grab the bull by the horns and charge into your future!
