Remember the thrill you had at the beginning of your job? The satisfaction you receive after being appreciated for a job well done? The deeper you go into the job, the more you start focusing on retaining the thrill factor.  However, what you don’t realise is, despite the thrill of the job, when you intertwine your lives, you stop loving your job and become fatigued.  In order to avoid this and to keep loving what you do, here is how you can do to maintain a good work and personal life balance:

1. Set limits

One of the most important things to remember while trying to maintain a balance between your two worlds is to set limits.  Start delegating and make sure you leave work at a reasonable time. Make a list of all the important events in your life (birthdays, anniversaries and important schedules) and make sure even if you have something really pressing at work, you don’t miss out on your commitments.  When you set limits like this, you not only have time to focus on your personal life, you also understand how your team and colleagues function when you aren’t around!

2. Prioritize your time

Your time is important and when you don’t understand that, you tend to take yourself lightly.  Create a timetable for yourself and when you have a list of your tasks in place, make sure you don’t do more than what you set out to do in the morning.  When you feel overburdened, see if you can push the least important things on your list to the next day. By doing this, you start understanding which parts of your day are the most productive and which parts aren’t.

3. Learn to take some me time

Just like when your gadgets shut off when they run out of juice due to being overused, the same can happen to you too if you overwork yourself.  Take some me time to balance your work and life and walk away when things become too much. Disconnect from everything related to your professional life and sit in a quiet place.  If required, meditate and calm your thoughts if you think cutting off is too hard to do. Taking some me time is extremely important because not only can you move away from conflicts and troubles, you can also make a better situation for yourself at work and home.

4. Don’t shy away from asking for help

What most people don’t realise is that if you feel overburdened with work, it is completely okay to ask for help.  People don’t think less of you because you feel overworked and cannot complete the things you have set for your day.  Join forces with people on whom you can rely and let them know if they help you, you will do the same for them. Learn to accept you are not a superhero who can achieve everything within the given 8 or 9 hours of your work time.  When you have an equitable relationship with your employees, not only can you make life easy for you, you also create a strong bond with your colleagues. Furthermore, when you ask for help, you can finish the task at hand faster and give yourself room to have a personal life as well as to get a breather from work, thereby giving yourself the luxury of time, a factor which you sorely need.

5. Be open

People don’t realise that when you want to maintain the right work life balance, it is important to be open about your needs.  While you may think people understand what you want and need, that isn’t always the case. Till you voice your concerns and make your colleagues aware of the fact you are being overburdened, they won’t know.  Have an open dialogue with your superiors and let them know why it is important for you to have a balanced schedule at work. Only when you lay out your concerns and keep everyone aware of your work life pattern can you have the ideal work life situation!

It is important to strike a balance between your professional and your personal life, without making your career the most important thing.  If you think we missed out on any other ways to maintain a work life balance, comment and let us know!
