New Year, new resolutions. For working people such as myself, one resolution will always be present at the back of my brain. How can I get that promotion, especially a promotion I deserve. If you find yourself in that position, then this article is for you. If you aren’t one who can nod his or her head to everything the boss has to say or if you are that person who needs to voice out your opinion then read on and we will try to help you out.

Work Hard
Before you go ahead and ask for that promotion, work hard to earn it. Let your actions and results speak louder than your words. In a cutthroat environment, results carry a lot of weight and are a sure shot way to put you in the limelight. How you are performing in your current position directly relates to how well you can perform at a higher level job.

Take the initiative
If you want to go up the ladder of success faster, take up the initiative to complete projects or start new ones before somebody hands it to you. Take charge and deliver. Don’t just start new projects to leave them high and dry. See them through and face all the obstacles that come your way. The route to the top is a long winding road but the view is worth it.

Don’t bite more than you can chew
While taking charge of new projects is good, don’t overload yourself so much that you set yourself up for failure. Make up your priorities and maintain a work life balance as well. Remember, too much of anything is too bad. Take bite site proportions and make sure you put in your 100% and don’t slack off.

Promotions are not based on merit alone
While you may be the best at your job and better than the rest, showing that off will not work in your favor. Stay grounded. Work hard but maintain good relationships with your colleagues. Talk to everyone, be friendly, help whoever you can, teach, learn and grow. Grapevine and politics is part and parcel of every company. But try to rise above the rumor mill and have a good tempo with everyone at work.

Don’t be a brown noser
Don’t try too hard and make it obvious that you are looking for a promotion. Nobody likes a suck up and a majority of the managers do not like such behavior. Contrary to popular opinion, flattery will not get you everywhere and might actually have a negative effect on your upward mobility.

Different company has different cultures. So not everything is written in stone. However, focusing on your job and giving it your 100% will take you further than you think.
