xAI Expands Horizons: Musk Acquires Hotshot to Revolutionize Text-to-Video Generation
Elon Musk’s xAI has acquired Hotshot, a New York-based generative AI startup specializing in text-to-video technology. Founded in 2017, Hotshot developed three advanced video models—Hotshot-XL, Hotshot Act One, and Hotshot—and was backed by investors including Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian and Lachy Groom. This acquisition is a significant step in xAI’s expansion into AI-driven video creation.
Hotshot CEO Aakash Sastry expressed excitement about leveraging xAI’s powerful computing cluster, Colossus, to scale their technology. As part of the transition, Hotshot will discontinue its services, allowing existing users to download their content until March 30, 2025.
This move aligns with xAI’s broader strategy to integrate video-generation capabilities into its Grok chatbot, embedded in X (formerly Twitter). The acquisition positions xAI as a competitor to OpenAI’s Sora model and other players in the generative AI space, signaling intensified competition and innovation in AI video technology.
