Google To Monitor Offensive And Upsetting Content

Google introduced a new system to keep a check on ‘offensive’ and ‘upsetting’ content on the internet. The world’s largest search engine Google, will now ensure that its ‘Search Results’ are not offensive.

Google now introduces “upsetting-offensive” category which will let you tag offensive content such as content promoting hate, racial slurs, graphic violence including child abuse or animal cruelty and harmful activities like human trafficking.

Google will be using human ‘quality raters’ and not algorithms. The whole idea behind keeping this flag on offending websites is to allow relevant search results to be given importance that keep inaccurate sites at bay.

Google has appointed over 10,000 “Quality Raters” who are actually human contractors that Google globally had appointed to evaluate its search results. The 160 page guidelines provide a fascinating look at how Google ranks the quality of its search engines.

This definitely seems like a well thought out step by Google. With this step, it not only helps in improving Google’s algorithms and making it more sensitive but also ensures that Google is not censoring search results just because some people may find it offensive.

The ultimate feedback from these Quality Raters will be then used to re-engineer Google’s machine learning systems to offer better quality searches.
